Learning from fire

An immersion into one of Caterina Roma’s wood firings

THE PROCESS

After many years of wood-firing, I am opening part of this process to a very small group of people.

For me, wood firing has never been simply a matter of reaching a temperature or following a predetermined procedure. It is a way of listening, observing, waiting, reading what is happening inside the kiln and, little by little, learning to communicate with the fire. My greatest master.

Only four people to take part in the preparation and firing: working, observing, feeding the fire and accompanying the long hours around the kiln.

It is an approach that requires a certain commitment to the process. No previous experience with wood firing is necessary, but familiarity with ceramics and, above all, a willingness to be fully present are required.

What I will share is not a method either. I am self-taught, and almost everything I know has come from doing, making mistakes, observing and returning to the fire again and again.

The learning here happens mostly in silence: observing, listening and beginning to establish a conversation with the fire.

THE FIRING

Loading and unloading are optional parts of the process, although I recommend attending whenever possible. They are also part of understanding the firing as a whole.

Each participant can bring up to 3 pieces to fire, as this will help them understand their transformation. Please bear in mind that the firing is strongly reducing, and this radically changes the appearance of the clay bodies and glazes compared to a firing in an electric kiln.

Approximate maximum size per piece: 15 × 15 cm
Clay: any high-temperature clay that has already been bisque fired
Glaze: high-temperature glaze
